Well, I did promise Yuen Ho that I will help with the food
reviews. But so far, nothing really great has struck me yet. Except for the following
which I am going to write regarding the Penang Char Kway Teow which had really make an
impression on me. The Penang char kway teow at Chinatown Square is really really very
very nice!! J Mmmmmmmmmmm, yummie! Well, this probably isn't
going to sound like a proper food review, as in we're supposed to be formal and neutral
and be objective yadda yadda yadda, but heck, it's nice, and I'm saying it again .. it's
really nice!
The Penang char kway teow as we all know is unlike the Singaporean black sauced and
sticky kind. But to compare it with other Penang Char Kway Teow in Singapore (which I have
tried, mainly found in other foodcourts, like Junction 8, Great World City etc.), I still
think this one's the best. Let's see, where shall I start. The first thing I noticed was
the real nice smell. It made my mouth water! The plate of char kway teow comes served on a
piece of banana leaf, how's that for creativity? I think it's also supposed to bring out
the flavour, yeah? The kway teow is not too oily (I can name a few places where the kway
teow is really oily!), not too wet or dry, in other words - just nice! I counted two
prawns, about five or six (I think) whata-call-that-? clams (although I would prefer mine
to be more thoroughly cooked) and lots of bean-sprouts, so much so that I finished my kway
teow and can't finish the bean-sprouts L . This
reminds me of one of Yuen Ho's friends who don't eat bean-sprouts, and has a very
interesting technique of eating every single piece of Kway teow and leaving all the
bean-sprouts in exactly the same position which will then plop down onto the plate! Cool
huh? The bean-sprouts are not over-cooked. That's the most important thing. If they are
over-cooked, they are usually limp and wet and soggy. Yucks. But the bean-sprouts here are
crispy and there isn't any black heads around. You know, those black bean-sprouts heads? I
think the cook was very particular about not leaving any to the consumer to remove them
off the plate, which is simply great! The char kway teow is really spicy, not too hot (as
in hot hot -- chilli hot!), really very tasty and very yummie!!! Drool
gee
just thinking of it makes me hungry!
Oh yeah, it's $3 per plate, and I think it's really extremely reasonable. Since
everyone else is also selling their Penang Char Kway Teow at $3, but then you can't get
something as nice and delicious as this one!
What with good company and good food, it was really a lunch well spent. We didn't have
to wait long, since it was a public holiday that day, but there was a queue! I think on
normal days, it's gonna be a long wait though, what with the office crowd and all that.
The stall also sells other authentic Penang dishes, and I have tried the Penang laksa
before , and I have to say, it's really good. How's that for someone who don't really like
laksa. Unfortunately the Penang prawn noodle is no longer available. Well, I'll leave
those others for another review another time. If you like Penang Char Kway Teow, and you
haven't tried this Penang Char Kway Teow yet, go try! You don't know what you are missing!
